Why Choose AVMC for Stroke Care Services?
Our certifications and capabilities reflect the specialized expertise required to treat stroke effectively. Here's what sets our stroke center apart:
We’re the Only Thrombectomy-Capable Center Nearby
AVMC is certified by The Joint Commission as a Thrombectomy Capable Center based on rigorous standards from the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. This confirms our readiness to handle the full spectrum of stroke care, from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation and education.
As a Thrombectomy Capable Center, we perform mechanical thrombectomy (clot retrieval) to remove blood clots from large vessels in the brain. Your interventional neurologist inserts a catheter with a specialized device to physically remove the blockage within 24 hours of stroke symptoms. AVMC is the only hospital in the region offering this life-saving procedure.
We’re Also a Designated Comprehensive Stroke Receiving Center
We have achieved the Gold Seal of Approval from the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency. These designations confirm we have the equipment, trained staff, and proven processes to deliver timely and effective stroke care based on the latest medical research and standards.

Our Stroke Treatments & Services
When patients arrive with stroke symptoms, they undergo rapid assessment and brain scans to confirm diagnosis and determine treatment eligibility. Our stroke team works together to provide fast diagnosis and treatment with a full range of stroke care options, including:
- Endovascular Coiling: A procedure performed for patients with a brain aneurysm. A minimally invasive catheter-based procedure is used to block off an aneurysm using coils.
- Surgical Clipping: A surgical procedure performed by a neurosurgeon to treat aneurysms. A small clip is placed on the aneurysm to close it off.
- Craniectomy: A life-saving surgery where part of the skull is temporarily removed to reduce pressure on the brain. This procedure may help patients with large strokes or bleeding in the brain.
- Ventriculostomy: A catheter inserted into the head by a neurosurgeon that can help monitor pressure and drain fluid. Some patients with large strokes or hemorrhagic strokes may benefit from this procedure.
Having all these treatment options available in-house means no delays and no transfers during the critical window for stroke care. This continues to set us apart from other medical centers when it comes to stroke care.
