One Decision, A Future Nurse’s Defining Moment

|

At just 18-years-old, Isabella, a volunteer at Antelope Valley Medical Center, found herself in a life-altering emergency during a casual Sunday morning coffee stop. What she initially thought was a tire blowout turned out to be a devastating crash, with vehicles engulfed in flames and an injured stranger fighting for their life.

With no emergency services yet on scene, Isabella leapt into action along with another bystander — kneeling beside the stranger, both taking turns performing chest compressions with guidance from a 911 dispatcher. At the scene, chaos unfolded with a vehicle on fire, windows exploding from the heat, and panicked onlookers. Still, Isabella remained focused on one thing, giving this person every chance to survive. "There was so much happening around us," Isabella recalled. "But while I was doing CPR, it was just me, the other bystander, and 911."

When first responders arrived, Isabella stepped aside and watched from the sidelines. The adrenaline that had pushed her through quickly faded and shock took over. She spent the rest of the day thinking, “Did I do the right thing? Did I do enough? That was really what I was battling,” she mentions.

Growing up with family members working in healthcare, Isabella learned the importance of caring for others during their most vulnerable moments, so for her father Juan, he understood her feelings all too well. As a nurse at Antelope Valley Medical Center, Juan has spent years helping patients through some of life's most difficult challenges, and when Isabella began questioning whether she had done enough, he reassured her that she had done exactly what was needed. “Our goal was to make sure she knew she did the right thing,” Juan recalled, “She put everything aside to help somebody who was fighting for their life.”

Isabella’s actions during this emergency reinforced those values she learned from her family and strengthened her commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare. "It solidified it even more," Isabella said, "I realized that I can do more and I can give people more chances."

As a father and a nurse, Juan could not have been prouder of Isabella’s actions that day. He saw not only the daughter he had raised, but the future healthcare professional she is soon to become. “The rewarding part of being able to take care of somebody at their most vulnerable state is what motivates me. That's what motivated her to intervene in this situation.”

As Isabella looks ahead to her future as a nurse, her heroism from that day will serve as a powerful reminder of why she chose this path. Long before earning her nursing degree, she demonstrated the qualities that define great caregivers, compassion, courage, and selflessness. What she expected to be a quick stop for coffee became a moment that changed her life, reassured her of her career goals, and demonstrated the impact that one person can have on the lives of many.
