Regular exercise is a key component for optimum physical and mental health. Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) and the City of Palmdale have joined forces to increase free access to exercise equipment for Antelope Valley residents.

At their Oct. 2 meeting, Palmdale City Council members unanimously approved plans to create the National Fitness Court presented by Antelope Valley Medical Center at Pelona Vista Park in Palmdale.

The fitness court is a best-in-class outdoor bodyweight circuit training system designed for adults of all ages and abilities. It will feature over 30 pieces of exercise equipment arranged in stations that allow for up to 28 people to use the court at the same time. The system features a series of full-body exercises that can be completed in just seven minutes. The 7 Movements in 7 Minutes is a simple yet powerful workout created for a range of athletic abilities that is shown to burn more calories per minute than most other forms of exercise.

"As a healthcare leader, our mission is to partner with others to improve the health of the Antelope Valley," said AVMC Chief Executive Officer Michael Wall. "This new fitness court is just one example of how we’re doing just that. We are excited to be partnering with the City of Palmdale to encourage local residents to exercise in a convenient location and at no cost to them."

"The City of Palmdale supports an active and healthy lifestyle for our residents," said Director of Recreation and Culture Keri Smith. "As part of the National Fitness Campaign, we are thrilled to offer this new, innovative and free option for people to enjoy and make good health a priority in their lives. We’re thankful for the generosity of Antelope Valley Medical Center to help make this fitness court a reality."

Construction will begin in early 2019, and the fitness court is expected to open in the spring.
