Recommended Vaccines By Age

Vaccination Schedules for Children & Adults

Vaccines are a safe and effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from serious diseases. In addition to preventing individual infection, immunizations help prevent widespread illness — eradicating smallpox and the near-eradication of polio and have saved millions of lives.

Today, vaccines are available to protect against several other diseases. It's essential to understand which vaccines are recommended for people of different ages in order to best protect yourself and your family.

Vaccinations for Children

There are a variety of vaccines that children need to stay healthy. These vaccines help protect against severe and sometimes deadly diseases, such as measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, and whooping cough.

The recommended vaccines vary by age, so it is important to consult your child's healthcare provider to ensure they are up-to-date on all the recommended vaccines.

For infants (6 through 11 months old), the recommended vaccines include:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)
  • Hib (haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • IPV (polio)
  • PCV13 (pneumococcal conjugate)
  • RV (rotavirus)

For children (1 through 4 years old), the recommended vaccines include:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)
  • Hib (haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • IPV (polio)
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • PCV13 (pneumococcal conjugate)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

For children (4 through 6 years old), the recommended vaccines include:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)
  • IPV (polio)
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • COVID-19 vaccination/booster

For preteens and teens (11 through 12 years old), the recommended vaccines include:

  • HPV (human papillomavirus)
  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis)
  • Meningococcal conjugate
  • Influenza
  • COVID-19 vaccination/booster

Vaccinations for Adults

It is also important for adults to stay up-to-date on their vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all adults should get the influenza vaccine every year. Other recommended vaccines for adults include:

  • Tetanus booster shots every 10 years
  • Pneumonia vaccines for those 65 years and older or those with certain risk factors
  • Shingles vaccines for those 50 years and older
  • HPV vaccines for men and women 26 years and younger, as well as some adults up to age 45
  • COVID-19 vaccination/boosters
