Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on Sept. 10

Third Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to Raise Awareness of Domestic Violence

Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) in partnership with Antelope Valley College (AVC), Zonta Club of the Antelope Valley Area and Assistance League of Antelope Valley is hosting the third annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event to raise awareness about gender-based violence.

The event features men walking a mile in high-heeled shoes around the AVC campus. It’s a live demonstration of the old saying, "You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes."

"Violence affects the health of a community, and this event helps raise awareness of the collaborative efforts underway to help people when they need it most," said Mary Reina, director of the AVMC Forensic Services Unit (FSU). "While Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a fun event, it is meant to help people understand the devastating effects of violence and encourage people to come together to create a healthier community."

While the primary purpose of the event is to raise awareness, any proceeds will benefit the AVMC FSU. The FSU assesses, documents, photographs and collects evidence on all cases presented to the hospital or referred by law enforcement. They also coordinate the medical/legal needs of victims and provide compassionate care to those who have experienced horrific crimes.

When: Saturday, September 10, 3 – 5 p.m.
Where: Antelope Valley College, Football Field Parking Lot, 3041 West Avenue K, Lancaster
