About AVMC
Antelope Valley Medical Center is the only full-service, acute-care district hospital in the Antelope Valley, delivering exceptional care to the community since 1955. As the region’s largest and most comprehensive hospital, Antelope Valley Medical Center provides care to over 220,000 patients every year. It serves as a significant economic engine in the community with close to 3,000 employees, 450+ volunteers, and more than 670 physicians on staff who represent 66 different specialties.
As a facility of the Antelope Valley Healthcare District, AVMC relies on the savings generated by participating in the 340B Drug Pricing Program to offset financial losses incurred in caring for underinsured and uninsured patients.
Benefits of the program
Savings realized through participation in the 340B program support AVMC’s ability to provide services and health care to the community's most vulnerable populations.
These services include:
- Discharge pharmacy services essential to reducing hospital readmission rates.
- Meds to beds program that help coordinate medications delivered to patients’ bedside prior to discharge.
- Establishment of a Transitions of Care Pharmacy Program to ensure safe discharge for our patients.
- Expanding Clinical Pharmacy services that focus on specialty areas such as Opioid Stewardship, Emergency Department Pharmacy Services, and Transplant Pharmacy Services to maximize patient care.
Consequences of scaling back
At AVMC, we are devoted to providing innovative, heartfelt care for the well-being of everyone in our community. Despite declining reimbursements, AVMC has resisted reducing mission-critical services and has instead utilized funding from the 340B Drug Pricing Program to maintain them.
The removal of 340B pricing at contract pharmacies directly impact patients who participate in AVMC’s ongoing community benefit initiatives. As drug manufacturers continue to withhold 340B pricing at contract pharmacies, AVMC may lose the funding required to provide or subsidize benefits we provide, affecting thousands of patients every year.
