How Much is One Drink?

Most people have heard the rule of thumb that your body is able to break down about one alcoholic beverage per hour—but what exactly does that mean? The truth is, this is heavily dependent on the type of alcohol being consumed.

The following guidelines are considered “one” serving size of each type of alcohol:

  • Beer: 12 ounce glass.
  • Wine: 5 ounce glass.
  • Distilled spirits: 1.5 ounce shot glass.
  • Liquor: 1.5 ounce shot glass.

Additional Drinking Safety Tips

In addition to paying attention to how much you’re drinking, the following tips can help to keep you and your community safe this holiday season:

  • Buzzed driving is still drunk driving.
  • Always have a designated driver.
  • Call a cab when you can’t drive yourself.
  • Don’t allow your friends to drink and drive.
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended.
